Description

Many skiers wait in line to be taken up the snowy slopes with a rope tow at Alta Vista at Paradise on Mount Rainier in this photo taken in the late 1930s. A rope tow was installed at Paradise in 1937. Pioneer Rainier skier Olive Rand first took to the slopes at Paradise in 1911, beginning years of skiing there for him. In 1935, the U.S. Olympic downhill ski team held their tryouts at Paradise. In 1940, a T-bar tow service was built at the Paradise slopes. At 5,400 feet, Paradise averages 641 inches of snow a year. When the snow is melted, Paradise and surrounding trails offer popular hikes during the summer.
