Description

Five skiers ski down a snow-capped roof of Paradise Inn at Mount Rainier in 1936. Paradise is the most popular destination for visitors to Mount Rainier Park. After a year-long construction, Paradise Inn opened in 1917 and it quickly became a popular place for skiers. To help accommodate skiers, a ski rope tow was installed in 1936. From 1942 to 1943, the U.S. Army used Paradise Inn for lodging as they trained for winter mountain conditions during World War II. Paradise is at 5,400 feet on the side of Mount Rainier, which is 14,100 feet. Paradise is the snowiest place on earth where snowfall measurements are kept regularly. Paradise averages 641 inches of snow a year and it set the world record for measured snowfall in a single year when 1,122 inches fell in the 1971-72 winter.
