Description

A 1953 Gonzaga University white on navy blue patch was presented to “Irish” Pat McMurtry in 1953. McMurtry, a Tacoma native, was one of the area’s biggest stars in the Pacific Northwest, a boxer who was homegrown, a legitimate title contender and potential heavyweight champion. McMurtry won the NCAA heavyweight title in 1954, was ranked fifth among the world’s heavyweight. One of his biggest career highlights was a decision over George Chuvalo at Madison Square Garden in 1958, in which he wore these boxing shorts. McMurtry, who had a career record of 33-4-1, was inducted into the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame and the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame.
