Description

Six women holding ski poles with skis on their backs get ready to hike to Summerland on Mount Rainier in this black-and-white photo taken in the late 1940s or early 1950s. They had to hike hiker up on the mountain to get to the snow. Jane Creswell Howe, who was a frequent skier and hiker on the slopes at Mount Rainier, is the third from the right in this photo. Today, Summerland is one of the most popular hikes on Mount Rainier and is a camp along the Wonderland Trail, which is the 92-mile trail around Mount Rainier.
