Gregory Schumacher was awarded this gold satin jacket after winning the 1964 All-American Soap Box Derby Championship. Schumacher, 14, of Tacoma, gave the Pacific Northwest its first derby world championships when he won the race in Akron, Ohio. Schumacher bettered 239 competitors in his sleek white racer to capture the $7,500 first-place scholarship. The first official All-American Soap Box Derby in Dayton, Ohio, was in 1934. The national race ran continuously until a four-year hiatus during World War II and then resumed in 1946 and has been held every year since. Tacoma held its first soap box derby in 1940.
