A lone skier moves along a winter road to Cayuse Pass in 1948. The pass was home to a ski area near Mount Rainier in the 1930s. In the 1937-38 winter season, 34,000 people used the area. In 1949-50 four rope-tows were installed, bolstering its use and linked the ski area to slopes near Tipsoo Lake. More than a decade later, Crystal Mountain Ski Area opened, reducing the popularity of Cayuse, but it kept running because the road was plowed and maintained in the winter allowing access from Enumclaw to White Pass. Today, Cayuse Pass is mostly used as backcountry skiing in late spring.Made/Created
