Description

With Mount Rainier in the background, a skier races down the roof of Paradise Inn and a friend waits for his turn in this black-and-white photo taken in 1929. Paradise Inn was built at 5,400 feet on the sides of Mount Rainier back in 1916 and opened on July 1, 1917. Originally, it was planned to be built at Longmire. In 1936, a rope tow for skiers was installed at Paradise, making it a very popular spot for skiers. Paradise Inn was closed in 2006 for two years for renovations and structural reinforcement to help the inn withstand an earthquake. During the 1930s, there was a popular ski race that started at Camp Muir, which is at 10,000 feet, and ended at Paradise, which is at 5,400 feet. Skiers would reach speeds of 60 miles per hour.
