Description

Circa 1929, a skier stands near a large rock or large tree stump as he cross-country skies along a trail near Paradise. Paradise was a popular place for skiers to come and ski and it was the training ground for several local skiers who went on to excel at national ski championships. Gretchen Fraser, who was born in Tacoma in 1919, was known as America's Lady of Skiing. In 1940, Fraser made the U.S. Olympic ski team but the Olympics were not held that year because of World War II. In 1948, she became the first American to win a gold medal in the alpine combined event and in 1952 she became the manager for the U.S. Olympic ski team.
