With Paradise Inn in the background, one skier stands next to the power line and another skis up a hill toward the lodge in this black-and-white photo taken in 1929. Paradise Inn opened on July 1, 1917 and in 1920 a four-story annex was added. In 1936, a ski rope tow was installed, helping to turn Paradise into a popular destination for skiing. In 1952, the Rainier National Park Company sold the inn to the National Park Service and they talked of demolishing the inn but a public outcry saved the lodge. In 2006, Paradise Inn was closed for two years for renovations to help the inn withstand a large earthquake.Lexicon
