Description

Skiers stand at the base of Paradise Inn as they get ready to go skiing in this black-and-white photo taken in 1929. Paradise Inn was built on the side of Mount Rainier at 5,400 feet in 1916 and opened on July 1, 1917. Paradise Inn was originally planned to be built at Longmire. In 1936, a ski rope tow was built at Paradise, making it one of the most popular places to come and go skiing. Paradise Inn was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987. It was closed in 2006 for two years for renovations.
