Description

Otto Lang cuts through the snow while skiing down Paradise valley on Mount Rainier, leaving a deep track in the snow behind him in this photo taken in 1936. According to the National Park Service, Paradise averages 641 inches of snow a year and it is the snowiest place on earth where snowfall is measured regularly. Paradise set the world record for measured snowfall in a single year when 1,122 inches fell in the 1971-72 winter. Since the 1920s, Paradise has been a popular destination for skiers. In 1937, a rope tow was installed at Paradise and a T-bar was added three years later. Paradise is the most popular place for visitors to Mount Rainier National Park. Of the 1.3 million people who visited the park in 2000, 62 percent went to Paradise.
