Description

After a heavy snowfall at Mount Rainier, six men work at clearing the snow off the roof of Paradise Inn, digging and sawing away the snow in this photo taken in 1929. At 5,400 feet, Paradise averages 640 inches of snow a year. With lots of trail heads at Paradise, back country skiing is there for the thrill seeker that wants to test their skills outside of the confines of a ski resort. Mount Rainier, which at 14,400 feet is the 17th tallest mountain in the United States, offers a less traveled winter experience for board skiers and alpine skiers looking for fun. In 1936, a rope tow for skiers was installed at Paradise but that was eventually taken out in the late 1940s.
