A pair of light brown leather boxing gloves of boxer Freddie “The Tacoma Assassin” Steele, believed to have been used in 1936.
Steele, who attended Bellarmine Prep, was recognized as the National Boxing Association (NBA) middleweight champion from 1936-38.
Steele won the title by beating Babe Risko in a 15-round decision July 11, 1936, in front of 27,000 at Civic Stadium in Seattle.
Steele defended his title three times, including a 15-round unanimous decision over Risko at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Feb. 19, 1937.
Steele posted a 125-5-11 (1 no contest) record with 60 knock outs.
After boxing, Steele performed in Hollywood films. He was the boxing double for Errol Flynn in 1942’s “Gentleman Jim.”
Steele appeared in 30 films, including “Bugsy,” “Hail to the Conquering Hero” and “The Story of G.I. Joe.”Lexicon
