Description

This 1972 photo collage features one of the final boys basketball teams in the brief history of the now-defunct Laughbon High School in Dupont, which opened with 10th graders in 1961, adding 11th and 12th graders in 1963 and '64. The school's last graduating glass was in 1973. The 1971-72 team posed here after becoming both the East Central League and Southwest Washington District champions. The head coach was Jerry Vermillion (upper left photo), who enjoyed a spectacular playing career at Gonzaga University from 1952-55. He is far-and-away the school's all-time leading rebounder with 1,670 and left as Gonzaga's leading scorer (since surpassed). Vermillion went on to coach at Saint Martin's University in Lacey. He was inducted into the Gonzaga Hall of Fame as a player in 1991 and the Saint Martin's Hall of Fame as a coach in 1995. He died on October 21, 2017. The upper right photo is of assistant coach Howard Wouters. In the team photo, players are (starting at 12:00 and going clockwise) Mike Wilson, Everett Cunningham, Mike Bradley, Vince Naverre, Dan Wood, Willie Lucas, John Flynn, Avery Evans and Harry Wilson. The coaches in the center (L-R) are Jerry Vermillion, Jim Sheppard and Howard Wouters.
