Description

A baseball is autographed by Tacoma Rainiers pitchers Brett Tomko and John Halama, who each made history during the 2001 season. Beneath Tomko’s signature is “7/3/01” and “no-hitter,” and beneath Halama’s autograph is “7-7-01” and “perfect game.” Tomko threw a no-hitter in the Rainiers’ 7-0 win at the Oklahoma RedHawks on July 3, 2001, Tacoma’s first no-hitter since June 10, 1991. Halama, in his second start for the Rainiers as part of the trade that sent Randy Johnson to Houston, threw the first nine-inning perfect game in Pacific Coast League history, a 6-0 win over the Calgary Cannons on July 7, 2001 at Tacoma’s Cheney Stadium. Halama struck out nine on 97 pitches. Tomko allowed only a first-inning walk while throwing 102 pitches, 69 for strikes, and striking out six in front of a sellout crowd of 13,066. The batter who drew the walk? Carlos Pena, who went on to play 1,493 games in the major leagues with the Tampa Bay Rays, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox, Oakland A’s, Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros.
