Description

Nineteen members of the Tacoma High School track and field team pose for a team photograph in 1905. The man in the upper left corner is believed to be coach Harry Booth, who also was athletic director for the Tacoma YMCA. Ernie Tanner is in the top row, third from right. Tanner was a standout in track, basketball, baseball and football for Stadium High School. He attended Whitworth College in Spokane in 1908-09, and was reportedly the first African-American to play college football in the Pacific Northwest. After college, Tanner was captain and manager of the Tacoma "Little Giants" of the local Negro League. His son, Jack Tanner, became the first African-American U.S. District Judge in the Pacific Northwest.
