Richard ‘Dick’ Perkins received his first racing bike from his father, a owner shop of Perkins Bicycle Shop, in 1949 and went on to claim the junior Washington Amateur Bicycle League Championship on June 24th of that year. Perkins, who attended Stadium High in Tacoma, won the race the next three years, each time winning a spot to nationals. Perkins raced in San Diego, New Jersey and twice in Columbus and was interviewed by ABC’s Wide World of Sports. He retired from bicycle racing in 1952.
