Description

Richard ‘Dick’ Perkins won the Washington State junior bicycle race on July 16, 1540, at Sea-Tac Speedway defending his title from the previous year. Perkins received his first racing bike from his father, a bike shop owner, in 1949 and went on to claim the junior Washington Amateur Bicycle League Championship in June of that year. Perkins, who attended Stadium High in Tacoma, won the race the next three years, each time winning a spot to nationals. Perkins raced in San Diego, New Jersey and twice in Columbus and was interviewed by ABC’s Wide World of Sports. He retired from bicycle racing in 1952.
