Description

In 1948, Howard Smith served as the Tacoma Athletic Commission’s fifth president, succeeding Jerry Geehan. His term was highlighted by three sporting events sponsored by the TAC: The Tacoma Open golf tournament at Fircrest, the rid-Go-Round at Lincoln Bowl and the Penn State-Washington State football game at Stadium Bowl. It also sponsored the state badminton tournament, opening ceremonies for the Pacific Coast Hockey League and started promoting itself as the “finest athletic promoters in the United States.” In ‘48, the TAC also found its home when it purchased the Top of the Ocean Building on Ruston Way.
