The Buckley Mountaineers basketball team was led by coach Bill Ames, a Western Washington College graduate, who was in his eighth year as the head coach of the Mountaineers who played in the Puget Sound League. Other teams in the league included Auburn, Clover Park, Kent, Puyallup, Renton, Lake Washington, Enumclaw, Highline and Sumner. Ames, a hometown boy, came back to Buckley in the Fall of 1938 as an assistant to Jimmy Ennis. That year the Buckley five won the league crown. Ames became head coach in 1939 and his basketball teams won the title in 1942 and finished second in 1941, 1943 and 1945. Ames played three years of football and one of basketball at Western. For the 1945-46 season, the Mountaineers were expected to compete in the upper division. According to a summary in the pre-season Puget Sound League tournament program, "with three players returning from last year's second-place finish, the Mountaineers can be a real title threat because of their height." The article continued, "Dave Smith, two-year veteran, and Joe Allman, one-year lettermen, are expected to be the stars of the team, although Lloyd Blanusa, Art Svidran and George Sweeny may develop rapidly during the season."
