The following story appeared in the 1946 Mountaineer yearbook: The football season of 1945-46 has been another successful year that will go down in the history of Buckley High. Although handicapped by the absence of experienced material, Coach Bill Ames put to the field a scrappy team that copped third place in the league standings with the winning of seven games and the losing of two. Starting in high gear the Mounts dumped the big Lake Washington eleven, 33-7; only to be at the short end of a 19-6 score after a trip to Puyallup. Against the Highline Pirates the Mountaineers scored twice in the fourth quarter to win 19-7. The Renton game proved to be a thriller with the Mounts nosing out the Indians 14-13. Clover Park handed the Mounts their second and last defeat by a score of 19-7. The grudge game of the season, Buckley versus Enumclaw, proved to be one-sides when the Mountaineers trampled the Tigers, 39-6. In a water-filled sand pit at Kent, the Vandals went down 19-6 and Auburn became the next victims and fell 26-7. The final game of the season at Sumner proved to be a thriller when the Buckley eleven, trailing in the first half, 7-0, came back to defeat the Spartans, 15-13. In compiling 178 points to their opponents 97, this year's squad has scored more points that any other team coached by Bill Ames in his eight years at Buckley. All in all, for the size of the student body enrolled at Buckley, the team should be congratulated for their achievements of the season. After a rather successful football season, the following players were chosen on the All-Conference first and second teams by the coaches of the Puget Sound League. Art Svidran, fullback, made a success out of his last year for the Mountaineers when he compiled 88 points to lead in the individual scoring department and thus gained a berth on the All-Conference First Team. Dave Smith, besides being the captain and calling the plays, played outstandingly at his right end position and for the third straight year landed a place on the All-Conference Team. Lloyd Blanusa, playing on the first string for the first time, did a fine job of snagging passes out of thin air and other player's hands to be chosen on the All-Conference Second Team. Bob Demko the only Buckley junior to place on the All-Conference Team, captured his position for his second consecutive year by playing the same very good game at Guard. Here's hoping Bob keeps up the drive and makes All-Conference next year.
