Description

Rawlings Official Baseball for the Pacific Coast League game ball used during Brett Tomko’s no-hitter on July 3, 2001. The ball is signed “Brett Tomko 7-3-01 ‘No Hitter’.” Tomko’s outing was the ninth no-hitter in Tacoma history, as he walked Oklahoma first baseman Carlos Pena in the first inning before retiring the final 25 batters in a 7-0 win over the RedHawks. That one walk was the only blemish in what otherwise would’ve been a perfect game; both Tomko and Pena went on to long MLB careers, with Tomko winning 100 games over 14 seasons and Pena hitting 286 home runs over 14 years. Tomko came over to the Mariners as part of the Ken Griffey, Jr., trade on Feb. 10, 2000, and was traded to the San Diego Padres following the 2001 season. He won a total of 10 games for the Mariners between 2000-01 while claiming 11 wins over those two seasons in Tacoma. In the no-hitter, Tomko threw 102 pitches, including 69 strikes, and finished the game with six strikeouts. The final out came on a called strike three, and he received a standing ovation from the crowd of more than 13,000 in Oklahoma City.
