Rawlings Official Baseball for the Pacific Coast League game ball used during John Halama’s perfect game on July 7, 2001. The ball is signed in blue ink “JH HL PERFECT GAME 7-7-01.” Halama appeared in only three games for Tacoma in 2001, spending most of the year with the Mariners, as he won 10 games and helped the team win the American League West title and tie an MLB record with 116 wins. He was sent down to Tacoma midway through the season, and in his second start he retired all 27 batters for the first nine-inning perfect game in Pacific Coast League history. He struck out nine batters and threw 97 total pitches in the 6-0 win over Calgary at Cheney Stadium. Quoted in the game story for The News Tribune, Halama said, “I was just trying to stay within myself. I was sent down here for a specific reason, to get my mechanics back and to get the ball down.” Halama came to the Mariners from the Houston Astros following the 1998 season as the “player to be named later” in the Randy Johnson trade. He totaled 56 wins over nine years with seven MLB teams. Forty-one of those wins came during his four-year stint (1999-2002) with the Mariners.
