Description

The 1957 Tacoma Cheney Studs baseball team went 41-11 for the season, won the Seattle City League championships and finished third in the Washington State tournament. George Kritsonis led the team with a .355 batting average and was 6-0 with a team-leading 1.05 ERA. The team photo includes Bob Maguinez, Joe Storini, Jack Johnson, Rod Keogh and Earl Hyder with copy of newspaper articles on displayed on the back. The Studs were part of a lager organization that included pee wee football, hockey and basketball at various divisions. Founder Ben Cheney was an avid baseball fan but grew up in a low-income family and couldn’t afford his own gear. Cheney worked to grow his own successful business in Tacoma, the Cheney Lumber Company, and began to sponsor youth sports programs for boys and girls until his death in 1971. Pictured back row, left to right, name unavailable, Dick Montgomery, Max Braman, Bob Maguinez, Vern Kohout, Don May, Dale Bloom, Don Hike, Jim Gallwas, Gordy Grubert and Bob Bafus. Front row, left to right, Tom Montgomery, Manly Mitchell, Russ Wilkerson, Ron Storaasli, Joe Stortini, Jack Johnson, Ron Billings, Rod Keogh, Earl Hyder, Doug McArthur, and Tommy Tucker (kneeling). The photograph was donated to this museum by Gene Anderson.
