Description

In this collage of the 1960 Carling Open, photos show the event held at the Fircrest Golf Club in Tacoma for the benefit of the American Cancer Society. The Carling Open was the inception of a series of golf tournaments on the PGA Tour and sponsored by the Carling Brewing Company beginning in 1953. Ernie Vossler was a pro golfer whose best finish came in a tie for fifth at the 1959 U.S. Open who later began designing and constructing golf courses and became involved in real estate development. Vossler was named the PGA Golf Professional of the Year in 1967. In 1974 Vossler and his associates founded the Oak Tree Golf Club, now known as the Oak Tree National which hosted the 1988 PGA Championship and the 2014 U.S. Senior Open. Photo donated by Jeanne Walters.
