Photo of Cliff Olson. Olson was a legendary Pacific Lutheran University (then Pacific Lutheran College) football coach and athletic director who launched the small college’s long history of gridiron success. Olson coached the Lutes 1929-41 and in ‘46. Times were tough and Olson took it on himself to stripe the field and wash towels along with his coaching duties. The field didn’t have goal posts and Olson felt obliged to schedule whoever was willing. This meant some games against high school teams. He didn’t have scholarships to offer but he managed to convince recruits to play for PLU. Among them were now-familiar names like Marv Tommervik and Marv Harshman. PLU won league titles 1939-41.Lexicon
