Description

Jim Rondeau of Tacoma served as the referee for the bout between George Foreman, right, and Ken Norton on March 26, 1974 in Caracas, Venezuela. The fight, billed as "The Caracas Caper," was for the heavyweight championships of the WBA, WBC and The Ring. Foreman knocked down Norton three times in the second round before Rondeau stopped the fight at the two minute mark. Foreman improved to 40-0 and Norton fell to 30-3. The fight was controversial because Foreman requested an English-speaking referee. After a dispute between U.S. and Venezuelan representatives, an agreement was reached and Rondeau refereed the fight. Rondeau, a Bremerton native, was appointed to the Washington State Boxing Commission in 1962 and joined the International Boxing Federation in 1966, serving as a trainer and evaluator of officials.
