Chuck Richards, who was born in Tacoma in 1945, competed for the United States at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, West Germany. Richards finished ninth in the pentathlon, which consists of fencing (one-touch epee), freestyle swimming, equestrian show jumping (15 jumps), and a final combined event of pistol shooting and cross country running (3,200 meters). Richards won the swimming portion of the pentathlon with a then-world and Olympic record time of 3 minutes, 21.7 seconds. He was part of the United States squad that finished fourth in the team pentathlon competition in Munich. Richards was a three-time All-American while at Stadium High School, winning six state championships in the butterfly, individual medley and freestyle. As a senior, he held seven of the eight individual state records. After graduating from Stadium, Richards competed for Indiana University.
