Description

Scotty Weinstone, a longtime supporter of local boxing, smiles broadly in this black-and-white photo. Starting in 1948, Weinstone was a supporter of an amateur boxing championship that was held in the Fieldhouse at the University of Puget Sound. It was an event the Tacoma Athletic Commission always supported. Each year, the TAC hosts award ceremonies and youth sporting events. Among those events are the annual Glden Gloves boxing championships, which are in their 68th year and are the second oldest in the country. The TAC also supports other events that are hosted by Metro Parks, Pierce County Parks, high schools, colleges, sports clubs and the Tacoma South Sound Sports. Four sports programs all find their roots in the Tacoma Athletic Commission. Those programs are the Tacoma Pierce County Sports Museum, the Tacoma Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame, the Tacoma-Pierce County Softball-Baseball Old Timers and the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame.
