Description

Here is a color photo of the AFL championship footballs. The photo was donated by Tacoma's Milt Woodard, who was appointed the president of the AFL in July 1966. His appointment came after the NFL and AFL agreed to merge. Woodard, a graduate of Tacoma's Stadium High School, served as the AFL president until the merger was finalized in March 1970. In 1989, Woodard was inducted into the Washington Sports Hall of Fame. Woodard served as the AFL president from July 1966 to March 1970, succeeding commissioner Al Davis as the chief executive of the league. After playing football and running track at Stadium, Woodward attended the College of Puget Sound and played baseball, graduating in 1933. His distinguished career as a sportswriter with the Tacoma News Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times followed.
