Description

Sports writer Milt Woodard (bottom row, second from right) and Chicago White Sox manager Jimmy Dykes (top row, center) pose with a group of people, including Chicago-area baseball writers in an undated photo. Dykes was player-manager and manager of the White Sox from 1934-46. Woodard, a Tacoma native, graduated from Stadium High School and the College of Puget Sound before becoming a sportswriter for the Tacoma News Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times. Woodard wrote a book, "So You Want to Run a Ball Club," which was published in 1951. Woodard went on to serve as president of the American Football League from 1966-70 until the AFL merged with the National Football League. He was instrumental in the AFL deciding to postpone games after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.
