Description

Skiing at Paradise on Mount Rainier has been a popular get away for over a century. It was back in the late 1880s when the daughter-in-law of park pioneer James Longmire said when she saw the valley on the side of Mount Rainier at 5,400 feet, “Oh, what a paradise.” And that is what Longmire called the park. In 1916, one year after the road to Paradise was opened, the popular Paradise Inn was built and it opened in July 1917. A ski rope tow was built above Paradise Inn in 1936, making it a popular place for skiers. In the winter, Paradise transforms from a flower valley to a snowy slope where cross-country skiers have fun. Paradise averages nearly 700 inches of snow a year.
