Description

This photo was taken a short distance from Paradise Inn and shows the woods and the amount of snow that falls there during the winter. Paradise Inn is nestled on the south slopes of Mount Rainier and during the summer the meadows are covered with wildflowers and firs and hemlocks. Each winter the snow comes and Paradise averages about 700 inches of snow each year, making it a popular destination point for those who like to ski and snowshoe. Paradise Inn opened on July 1, 1917 and it cost about $100,000 to build the 120-room hotel that was built at 5,400 feet on the side of the 14,500-foot Mount Rainier. Three years after the lodge opened, a four-story Paradise Annex was added in 1920 to the hotel. In 1936, a rope tow for skiing was installed, making it a popular destination for skiers.
