Description

In this black-and-white photo taken in 1929, two cross-country skiers speed along the deep snow above Paradise Inn. The 121-room hotel opened in 1917 and has remained a popular destination for skiers. Paradise Inn is open for lodging from May to October and the nearest campground is located seven miles west at Cougar Rock. In 1920, a four-story annex was added to Paradise Inn and it had 100 rooms. In 1936, a ski rope tow was installed and Paradise became a popular spot for skiers. Joe LaPorte, who was born in 1921, enjoyed skiing in his teens when his father took him to Paradise. LaPorte was the chief instructor of the Tacoma Ski School from 1952 to 1965. He was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
