Royce Ward skis past the snow ghosts (snow-covered trees) on Alta Vista, a knoll located above Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park. Paradise was the preeminent skiing destination in Pierce County before Crystal Mountain opened in 1962. Ward was a member of the 10th Mountain Division, an Army unit trained in mountain warfare.
