New York Cosmos defender Jeff Durgan competes for the ball against arguably one of the most famous and talented soccer players in the world, Pelé of Brazil. The Cosmos took on the Brazilian national team in a 1984 friendly with the Cosmos. Durgan was a standout high school player in Tacoma. Durgan, who graduated from Stadium High School in 1979, also played club ball for the Norpoint Royals. He earned North American Soccer League Rookie of the Year honors in 1980 with the Cosmos. Durgan played for the NASL team for two seasons and earned a spot on the U.S. National and Olympic teams. He finished his career with the Tacoma Stars of the MISL. Durgan was inducted into the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Photo donated by Jeff Durgan.
