Cheney Stud player Ron Dodge swings while at the plate at Cheney Field. Dodge played for the 1955 Washington Cheney Studs, the 1956 Cheney Studs, and the 1957 Seattle Cheney Studs. In 1959 he played in the Northwest league for the Yakima Bears. He played in 36 games with 89 at-bats and a .225 batting average. He had 20 hits, including one home run. He finished the 1959 season playing for the Seattle Rainiers. He appeared in 43 games with 95 at-bats and a .221 batting average. He had 21 hits including five doubles and a home run. In the mid-1960s, Dodge enlisted in the Navy to become a pilot. He was assigned to VF-51, a fighter squadron attached to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hancock. On May 17, 1967, Lt. Dodge's plane was shot down over North Vietnam. A photograph of Dodge in captivity appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine on November 10, 1972 with several articles about prisoners of war in Vietnam. In 1973, the United States negotiated the release of 591 prisoners of war from the North Vietnamese. Cmdr. Dodge (promoted while in captivity) was not released. His remains were turned over to the United States on July 8, 1981.Lexicon
