Ben Cheney, top left, poses with 24 youth football players, two team managers and three others adults in front of a sign for Cheney Field (now Cheney Stadium). Cheney founded the Cheney Lumber Company in 1936 and is credited with standardizing the size of wall studs at 8 feet long by 2 inches thick and 4 inches wide. Cheney, who held an 11 percent stake in the San Francisco Giants, contributed $100,000 to cover construction overruns at Cheney Field.
