Description

The Cheney Studs Pee Wee baseball team were one of 230 teams under founder Ben Cheney’s philanthropist efforts. Collectively they won 42 league titles, nine state and regional championships and one national AABC and four CSABA crowns. Cheney was an avid baseball fan but grew up in a low-income family and couldn’t afford his own gear. Cheney worked to grow his own successful business in Tacoma, the Cheney Lumber Company, and began to sponsor youth sports programs for boys and girls until his death in 1971. Pictured, back row, left to right: Don Moore (coach), John Risse, Dan Hansen, Fiore Pignataro, Tim Harkins, Rick Keely, Stewart Jacques and Peter Vale (coach). Front row, left to right: Kevin Evoy, Tom Kneeshaw, Gary Simpson, Don Moore (batboy), Phil Lunke, Terry Moore, Jim Tucci and Vern Harkins. Not pictured are Mike McNerthney and Jim Sayles. The photograph was donated to this museum by Gene Anderson.
