Description

Monte Geiger played nine seasons for the Cheney Studs baseball team, from 1954-57 and 1959-63. Geiger, a Bremerton native and University of Washington pitcher, won MVP honors with two wins in five games at the Western Regional and qualifying for the nationals in 1954. Geiger was a major part of the team’s 1959 success that saw the Studs earn the Seattle City League, Washington State AABC, Northwest Regional AABC championships as well as a runner-up finish at nationals. Geiger had a pitching record of 9-2 and a 1.03 ERA. He was also instrumental in helping the Studs win the 1960 AABC national title. Geiger’s success wasn’t limited to the Northwest. Geiger was one of three Studs’ players who were chosen to play for the 25-man U.S. Amateur Athletic Union team that toured South Africa during the winter of 1956. Cheney Studs founder Ben Cheney was an avid baseball fan but grew up in a low-income family and couldn’t afford his own gear. Cheney worked to grow his own successful business in Tacoma, the Cheney Lumber Company, and began to sponsor youth sports programs for boys and girls until his death in 1971. The photograph was donated to this museum by Gene Anderson.
