Description

The 1960 Cheney Studs Connie Mack team was one of several Ben Cheney-backed baseball teams under the Studs organization. Those divisions included Rookie, Pee Wee, Midget, Bantam, Colt, Babe Ruth, Junior and Connie Mack. The organization was central in the development of youth baseball in Pierce County and allowed players to move up to the next level. Founder and philanthropist Ben Cheney was an avid baseball fan but grew up in a low-income family and couldn’t afford his own gear. Cheney worked to grow his own successful business in Tacoma, the Cheney Lumber Company, and began to sponsor youth sports programs for boys and girls until his death in 1971. Pictured in the photo of the 1960 team in the back row, left to right, are Jim Thomas, Tom Rowland, John Kirkebo, Tom Sisul, Don Brennan, Don Hagen and Chuck Matson. Front row, left to right, include Bill Zenk, Bruce Warter, Joe Cox, an unidentified player, Bob Hovee, an unidentified player, Gary Tiedeman and Sy Hovee, coach. The photograph was donated to this museum by Gene Anderson.
