Description

Washington Governor Albert Rosellini and Stadium High School graduate Neil Hoff present an award to Bruce Bennett, an actor and former football star. Bennett, then known as Herman Brix, was born in Tacoma and graduated from Stadium High School in 1924. Brix went on to play left tackle for the University of Washington, earning All-Coast honors. Brix was a standout in the shot put for the Huskies, winning the NCAA title in 1927 and qualifying for the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. Brix set a world and Olympic record of 51 feet, 8 inches during his first throw at the Olympics. Teammate John Kruk later beat Brix's mark by 4 3/4 inches to win the gold medal, with Brix taking home the silver. Brix was cast as the lead in "The New Adventures of Tarzan," which was released in 1935. He changed his name to Bruce Bennett in 1939 to avoid being typecast. He is listed with 151 acting credits on the Internet Movie Database. Rosellini, a Tacoma native, graduated from Stadium High School in 1927. He was the youngest member when he was elected to the Washington senate in 1939. He was elected governor in 1956, serving until January 1965. Hoff graduated from Stadium High School in 1939 and attended Pacific Lutheran College from 1939-1942 before serving in the Army from 1942-45 during World War II. He was twice elected president of the Tacoma Athletic Commission. Hoff was professor of Business Law at Pacific Lutheran University for two years and practiced law in Tacoma for 51 years.
