Description

A model racing bicycle with a red frame is one piece of memorabilia from Richard Perkins. Perkins won six Amateur Bicycle League Championships and two titles with the Bicycle Institute of America in the late 1940s to mid 1950s. In the summer of 1949, Perkins won the junior Washington Amateur Bicycle League championship and then won it the next three years, each time earning an all-expenses paid trip to nationals. Perkins, a Stadium High graduate, raced in San Diego, New Jersey and Columbus, Ohio. Perkins retired from racing in 1952, enrolled at the University of Washington and then joined the Army. Perkins taught biology at Tacoma Community College for 25 years.
