Description

This “mini-bat” was used in the national slowpitch softball tournament in Parma, Ohio, back in 1969. Tacoma has had numerous successful slowpitch teams over the years that have played at national tournaments. Dick Zierman, who played football, basketball and baseball at Lincoln High School, was a successful pitcher, catcher and outfielder playing softball in Tacoma in the 1960s and 1970s. He also coached the Glow-worm, West End and Dean's Tavern, and Heidelberg softball teams. Zierman was a player-coach for Wested Tire in 1976 when they won the Western Washington League championship. He was named to 14 all-star teams as a player. Zierman, who donated this bat, also umpired for 21 years. The People's Church softball team has been the one local team most prominent on the national level. From 1968 to 1997, the team compiled an impressive 1,368-411 record and won the USSA Church World “A” Championship in 1991 and 1993.
