Schumacher, who is from Tacoma, became the first racer from Washington to win the national championship that draws contestants from across the country. The national Soap Box Derby began in 1934 in Akron, Ohio, and was held every year until the start of World War II and was postponed four years and resumed in Akron in 1946.
