Wearing his helmet, Greg Schumacher sits in his homemade soap box derby racer that he won the 1964 All-America Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. Schumacher, who is from Tacoma, became the first racer from Washington to win the national championship that draws contestants from across the country. The national Soap Box Derby began in 1934 in Akron, Ohio, and was held every year until the start of World War II and was postponed four years and resumed in Akron in 1946. Until 1971, the Soap Box Derby was opened only to boys.
