Description

In this black-and-white photo taken in 1938, Harold Freiter sits in his wooden Soap Box Derby race car. Westlin, the race's runner-up, sits in the car next to Freiter. Since 1934, kids across the country have raced their homemade Soap Box Derby cars that are powered by gravity and have no motors. Nationals are held at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio, every July. The Derby Downs track was originally 1,150 feet. But after improved design led to faster speeds and more hospital visits, the track was shortened and is now 989.4 feet. The record is 28.2 seconds
