Description

Gregory Shoemacher and his father made this wooden car to race in the Soap Box Derby. Shoemacher won the national title in 1964 after winning the regional qualifying race in Tacoma. In 1964, Shoemacher won the National Soap Box Derby Championship, beating drivers from across the country. The national Soap Box Derby championships were held inn Akron, Ohio, beginning in 1934 and grew into a popular event. Boys' Life magazine said that in May 1959 about three million fans watched derbies across the country.
