Description

Clarence Stave entered the umpire scene in 1924, where he officiated baseball games in the Timber League. Stave was known for his comical calls from behind of the plate, where he would put together stunts or skits with players he officiated as a way to draw out the crowd and to put on a show. In one instance, Stave was hit on a back swing from left-hander Louie Balsano in one of his at-bats, and when Balsano next stepped into the batters box, Stave called "strike one, two and three, you're out!" as a way to poke at Balsano's previous encounter. Stave officiated for 25 years.
