Description

Football official Ray Highsmith, shaking hands with University of Washington football coach Don James, started his career as a referee while working games for the South End Boys Club in Tacoma in 1965. Highsmith, a Colorado native and scholarship pitcher for Stanford University and became a jet pilot in the Air Force, officiated high school and college assignments before officiating his first Pac-8 Conference game in 1972. He went on to work for 20 years in the Pac-8/Pac-10 including the 1983 Rose Bowl and went on to become an official timer in the NFL for 14 seasons.
