A black and white photograph of Jack Johnson officiating a National Football League game. Johnson enjoyed a lengthy career as a basketball and football official in the area, and he was the first NFL official to come from Tacoma. Before his officiating career, Johnson was an outstanding all-around athlete. He played catcher for Pacific Lutheran University, and also caught for Tacoma’s first ever national championship team when the Stanley’s Shoemen blasted East Chicago, Indiana, 10-0, to win the crown; Johnson edged out teammate Bob Maguinez for Most Valuable Player at the regionals. Johnson also played basketball for the Cheney Studs AAU competitive basketball team owned and named after Tacoma legend Ben Cheney.
